A couple months ago I was browsing the #berlinvegan Instagram hashtag from @sophisticatedisabella with a lovely picture of tons of delicious-looking veggies with mention of delivery in Berlin.

Now I used to be a member of a really awesome Food Co-Op in Berlin that was not only a community and group of foodies, but focuses on local veggies, etc. called The Dickes Bee Food Cooperative. However, as it’s alllll the way on the other side of the city from me in Wedding and I’m quite busy nowadays, I’d been looking for an alternative for awhile.

I commented on Isabella’s picture and she wrote me with a €10 voucher to try Bonativo. You also get to choose a free delivery day and time for free the first order, so I gave it a go…and I’ve been hooked ever since!

If you live in Berlin, then you’re aware of how frustrating the post can be. The great thing about Bonativo is that they have their own delivery service that does NOT go through the Deutsche Post. They even text you when they’re on their way and then again right before they arrive. Just enough time to quickly change out of your pajamas ;).

While the website is not only vegan, it is super well-labeled and you can sort by vegan. Their offerings are also strongly focused on regional and local products, which I find especially awesome! See this page of fruit and vegetable boxes for example:

They also have some pretty creative boxes, including a smoothie box and this Vegan Fitness box here:

Of course you can also just choose which veggies, fruits, etc. you want separately. They have tons  besides fruits and veggies as well! You’ll find nice vegan oils, a craft beer box, different tofus, vegan sausage, jams, mueslis, chocolate, chutneys, soy and almond milks, ready-made soups, juices, breads, rolls, coffee, tea and even gluten-free baked goods!

Week by week the variety is always being added to and changing, so it never gets boring! I love that there’s finally a convenient way to order local vegan products! I love browsing their website, it’s setup is nice and simple with pictures of every single product.

Bonativo in Action

Here’s my first order from Bonativo:

Bonativo stumbled upon my first instagram and got in touch offering to send me a a bag full of noms in exchange for showing some recipes and what I did with it all. Of course I took them up on it! Here is my second haul from Bonativo:

I started out real simple for a weekday breakfast. I’d been oogling their Bali Dream Muesli with cashews, chia seeds and cardamom, so I thought this would be a good chance to try it out. I also am obsessed with peaches so here is some fresh peaches with muesli from Bonativo, served simply with some soymilk and plain yogurt. And coffee of course. This powered me through my first few hours of work!

For dinner later in the week, I decided to throw together a pizza-flatbread kinda thing. First, throw together a quick pizza dough. It’s easy I promise!

Pizza Dough Recipe

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups spelt flour, bread flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 envelope instant dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus 2 teaspoons

Combine the flour (I used a mixture of spelt (dinkelmehl) from Bonativo and all-purpose, sugar, yeast and salt in a bowl. I used a food processor with the dough attachment to make it super easy. Combine, then add the water and 2 tablespoons of the oil and mix until the dough forms into a ball.  If using a food processor or mixes, do this while it’s running. If the dough is sticky, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together in a solid ball. If the dough is too dry, add additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Scrape the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead into a smooth, firm ball.

Grease a large bowl with the remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil, add the dough,  then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in a warm area. Wait till it doubles in size, about 1 hour. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 2 equal pieces. At this point I took one of the balls and froze in a plastic bag for easy pizza later.

I spread the tough out on my new Silpat (no more parchment paper needed!), but of course parchment paper also works! I topped it with Pomodore Rucola Pesto, then zucchini like so:

After this I added some thin eggplant slices on top of the zucchini, then some red pepper and yummy smoked tofu, all from Bonativo. I also added a tiny bit of homemade vegan cheese I needed to use up, but this works just fine without it as well. Get creative! The possibilities are endless and a pizza is great to use up various things sitting around in the fridge!

So many veggies!

I had to make the most of the awesome veggie selection as well. I decided on a simple salad to showcase the vegetables in their natural state. Here is an epic salad I made all from Bonativo veggies! The salad is made from a lettuce mix (Plücksalat), beefsteak tomato (Fleischtomaten), alfalfa sprouts, yellow and red pepper, carrots, avocado, smoked tofu, radishes, red onion and tossed with a dressing made from lemon juice, oil (I used walnut oil but olive oil, etc. is totally fine!) and some Herbs de Provence (Salatkräuter, etc. work just fine too!) with salt. Easy. Delicious.

I was so into the salad I even recreated it the next day, this time in a wrap with a vegan schnitzel.

Bad picture below, but I had some leftover Bonativo zucchini and Pomodore Rucola Pesto and I just bought this rad vegetable peeler that makes veggies into spaghetti (Julienneschneider here). So! Here is some zucchini pasta (Zoodles) tossed with a bit of brown rice pasta and the Pomodore Rucola Pesto from Bonativo, some vegan meatballs and vegan cheese. It turned out so freaking amazing.
