Vegan MoFo Post #2

Another fly-by visit, more detailed perusing needed another time! Madison, Wisconsin ended up being pretty rad. Not only was it one of the most bike-able places I visited, there were tons of vegan things all over and lots of good beer…and lots of lakes!

We couchsurfed with a lovely host who lived in a big 25 person co-op called the Nottingham Co-Op. They had a balcony overlooking the lake, gorgeous! Then we went to our host’s friends’ place and drank beers next to another lake, which you can see in the picture above. They also had a huge awesome garden. Thus, Madison is full of lakes in my opinion.

Natt Spil Vegan Three Cup Tofu | Vegan Nom Noms

To be honest, there was more beer-drinking than eating, but we did check out one place fort food. According to foursquare though, Madison is quite vegan friendly. However, it is not a good place to bring a car. I spent 45 minutes circling trying to find a good place to park to go to a cafe the next morning that had vegan things, only to give up. It’s also the only place I’ve gotten a parking ticket so far.

Anyway, ignore the horrible quality of the picture above…there was obviously a very bright red light tinting everything. We went to a bar/pub called Natt Spil and they had a dish called Three Cup Tofu, which was basically a tofu stir-fry with rice, veggies and a pickled things salad. It was okay, but I didn’t like the texture of the tofu. The appetizers we got, some chips and guac (a big portion of guac too!) and the Mediterranean Platter were pretty good though and also vegan!

Bike rentals in Madison Wisconsin | Vegan Nom Noms

Walking back to my car before said parking ticket, I saw these short-term rental bikes all over. Not bad for a smaller city, yay bikes!

Einstein Bagels Madison Wisconsin | Vegan Nom Noms

After I failed at parking the morning we left, my friend and I just decided to leave the center and get something out on the edge where we could just park in a lot for free. We had a long day of driving ahead so nothing fancy. We went to the chain Einstein Bros Bagels. They didn’t have anything totally vegan on the menu, but they were happy to make something I could eat, so points to them! I got a bagel with lots of veggies and some hummus and it came with a little fruit salad and a pickle. I also got an unsweetened iced tea, not a bad meal!

Although there’s not much pictured here, there was a lot of vegan food and yummy craft beer in Madison, so if you’re heading there you will definitely not starve!

Next stop…Minneapolis, Minnesota! Wanna read about where I’ve been so far, check out the Posts By Location page!
